Management of Breast Cancer
Surgery Options - EARLY BREAST CANCER
Removal of lump (surgery) followed by radiotherapy to retain a breast acceptable in appearance.The aim is breast conservation, without increasing the risk of recurrence. 70% of our patients presently keep their breast.

The ext step if suspected / likely spread beyond initial area is:
Partial Mastectomy + Axillary Clearance + Radiotherapy
Operation: partial mastectomy, with lymph node clearance
General Anaesthetic : Theatre time 2 1/2 hours

Hospital stay - 2 to 5 days
Recovery - 2 to 5 weeks

Overall survival the same as for modified radical mastectomy (previous most common operation).
Local Recurrence (5 - 8%) - the same with early breast cancery 30% of patients will need mastectomy.

Immediate or delayed Reconstruction should be offered to all patient
