Breast Surgery

There are a number of possible types of surgery you may be offered depending on what your problem might be. Of course coming to see a surgeon does not mean that you will have an operation, and all the possible treatment options will be fully discussed before you reach any decision.

Usually you will see Sonja first, and if she thinks an operation is a possible choice then you will see Belinda. She may recommend one of the following;

TYPES OF SURGERY:
1. Breast lump excision, and biopsy - always with pathology examination
2. Breast biopsy with hookwire localisation + pathology - as with all tissue
3. Partial mastectomy with usually lymph nodes as below:
4. Axillary lymph node dissection (and removal, pathology exam)
5. Full (modified radical) mastectomy
6. Breast reconstruction operations, to restore the breast: immediate or delayed

OPTIONS:
TRAM FLAP
Latissimus Dorsi Flap
Prosthesis Expander
